checking for off site image

I'd like a test to see if an image not saved locally exists or not, but I'm beginning to
wonder if there's a way. I've tried:
getimagesize ('http://offsite.image.gif',
$info);
if ($info[3] != "")
$title= 'print out image html';
else
$title= 'give some text';
My URL fopen wrapper is enabled... getimagesize doesent work for off site?
My error? or do one of you have a crafty solution?
