I tried it and got the following message:
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.
C:\DOCUME~1\BEN>cd c:\mysql\bin
C:\MYSQL\BIN>mysqld --standalone
'MYSQLD' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Any suggestions?

try 'mysqld --standalone' (note the space)
it appears that you are not actually starting mysqld
