own php functions.

hope this question have simpe answer.... what is the simplest procces should i take, to compile my own function into the php code? mean, if i do this simple code: int function ret1(void){ return 1; } what i need todo for using it into my php script? there is documention that describe it (not the comments on the page....)? thanks moshe.
