Yeah, for buttons (radio/checkboxes) I had to put an if statement on each one:

      <td width="84%">
        <input type="radio" name="formatting" value="unformatted"
          <?
        	if($format == "unformatted") echo "checked";
          ?>>
        unformatted
        <input type="radio" name="formatting" value="table"
          <?
        	if($format == "table") echo "checked";
          ?>>
