MySQL is very fast (and free). PostgreSQL is a very good database too. And yes, PHP can work with PostgreSQL (just need to compile the support in - the same way you did for mysql). AFAIK, there aren't any disadvatages of using PostgreSQL. It is a good solid db. However, because MYSQL doesn't support transactions, it's a lot faster then the competition (for better or for worse. if you need transaction support, mysql isn't the way to go).
