imagegif problem with gd 1.6.

hi~.
I am using php 3.0.16 & gd 1.6 for image generation.
but php 3.0.16 manual says gd 1.6 does not support gif,
so i cannot use imagegif() function.
if I compile php 3.0.15 & gd 1.3, php cannot found gd
(after configure, #define HAVE_GD 0 in config.h)
if I compile php 3.0.12 & gd 1.3, php can found gd.
Can't I use php 3.0.15 & gd 1.3 ?
what's wrong?
I wanna use php 3.0.15 above for security problem.
