If I were you, I would start looking into procmail.
http://www.procmail.org
You would set up an alias on your server... Something like
submissions@server.com. Procmail would filter the email for the important
stuff and pass that on to a PHP script. The php script would then update
your database.
Try a google search on "procmail php".
