Shouldn't this work:
$string = $string . "Some text added to the end";
Or am I thinking your question is simpler than it really is?

I was just wondering if there was a way to add new text to the end of
strings. I tried doing
$message += "Some text here";
but that just set $message to 0. I'm sure it's something simple but I
couldn't find anything on it in the documentation.
