You'll need to have parentheses in the regex. Something like this:
eregi ("(<br>)", $Note, $matches);
Then the values in $matches should be:
$matches[0] = "<br>This is line 1.<br>This is line 2.<br>This is line
3.<br>"
$matches[1] = "<br>" // namely the first "<br>" in the string.
I don't know, however, if any of the other "<br>" substrings will be
matched and put into $matches...
i.e.:
$matches[2] = "<br>" // the second "<br>"
$matches[3] = "<br>" // the last "<br>"
