Using Interbase blob fields

Currently, I am using the following code to read a blob field containing a
string:
$blob_info = ibase_blob_info($row->COMMENTS);
$blob_len = $blob_info[0];
$bid = ibase_blob_open($row->COMMENTS);
$req_comments = ibase_blob_get($bid, $blob_len);
ibase_blob_close($bid);
$req_comments = fix_string($req_comments);
ibase_blob_echo($row->COMMENTS) echos the contents to the browser. Is there
some way I can put the data into a variable or simplify the above code?
