I think he already has the best solution. Store two images. How many thumbnails are there on a page? At 1-2 seconds per image to resize how long will you make every visitor wait to see the thumbnails? Disk space is cheap. If you have to buy another drive - no big deal. I don't know about you, but for me if a web page doesn't load in about 10-15 seconds I'm outa here!
