That alternative syntax is good for when doing conditional HTML loops. For
example, for me, the following looks odd and untidy:
if (something) {
?>
<p>Hello</p>
<?
}
Whereas this is much neater:
<? if (something): ?>
<p>Hello</p>
<? endif; ?>
