How are you going to do that with anything?
If you develop this great website for someone, who's to stop surfers
from getting your HTML source and replicating it elsewhere? Who's
around to stop people from making and distributing copies of big name
software? (Photoshop, Windows, Office, etc.) If Microsoft and Adobe
can't come up with a fix for it, who can? Sure, you can
compile/encrypt/obfuscate your source code, but what's to stop your
client from giving that program to others, and those others from giving
it to even more others, and so on? You know what helps? That's right, a
written contract saying they won't do that. It's not bulletproof, but
if you see a single copy of your program out there being used by
someone else, you have legal grounds to sue your original client for
any damages caused. Simple as that.
