is mysql running?
have you done anything to the php.ini that could have changed mysql
settings?
is mysql running on the default port?
make a phpinfo() page and have a look under the mysql section.
Should look like this:

But I get the same result, the PHP doesn't seem to be talking to SQL, using
"IfonlyIcouldgetthisworking" for a user name produces the same result, no
errors.
