phpize error

I was trying to add functions following the instructions
given by README.*.
I tried
> ./ext_skel --extname=stat
but it stopped in the middle. So I make ext/stat
directory and generate config.m4, Makefile.in, stat.c php_stat.h
files. And issued
> /usr/local/bin/phpize
It ends with the following messages.

NONE:0: /usr/local/bin/m4: ERROR: EOF in string
/usr/local/bin/m4: autoheader.m4 : No such file or directory
NONE:0: /usr/local/bin/m4: ERROR: EOF in string

It doesn't give me "configure" file.
Any help ?
(php-4.0.1pl2 on solaris2.7)
