PHP And PostgreSQL

Hi, I have a script that includes an outside file. The first thing the script does is call a function that is defined in the outside file. That function uses pg_connect to connect to a database. It closes the connection before returning. In the script, the next step is opening a connection to a database again. This connection works fine for the query on the line right below it but when I use the resource link further down the script, it says it's not valid. Any ideas or have I completely confused people?
