I'm using 1.4.2, but I can't say if that's the root of the problem.
[root@elza ~]# rpm -qa | grep gcc
gcc-4.0.0-8
libgcc-4.0.0-6
libgcc-4.0.0-8
Using 3.3.5 here.

This is really looking wierd. What m4 version are you using? I'm using 1.4.2. I think most if not all problems steam from the underlying problem that all the macros are not properly initialized.
[root@elza php-gtk]# './configure' '--prefix=/usr/local/php5'
'--exec-prefix=/usr/local/php5' '--disable-scrollpane'
'--disable-spaned' '--disable-sqpane' '--disable-combobutton'
'--disable-libglade' '--disable-piemenu'
-bash: ./configure: Permission denied
I'm having this problem repeatadly too.
./configure: line 2682: s/.*>//: No such file or directory
Also very wierd. Some expressions are not properly quoted/expanded or something like that.
checking for gawk... (cached) gawk
./configure: line 3262: -e: command not found
./configure: line 3274:
s#@ext_srcdir@#/compartilhado/downloads/php-gtk2/php-gtk#g: No such file

./configure: line 3274: s#@ext_builddir@#.#g: command not found
Same as above. Looks really like one of the tools in the chain doesn't work properly.
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.6.0... yes (version 2.6.4)
./configure: line 9127: s/[^a-zA-Z0-9]/_/g: No such file or directory
I'm getting wondering if the shell could be the problem? But I don't think so.
Jani is the god when it comes to this stuff (cc'ed him).
Anyway, the current requirements for php-gtk2 are really very fragile at the moment as I'm running in similiar problems every time I need to set up a development environment (and try not to change it once it's running).
good luck,
- Markus
