debian build && atk version

Hi , I can build on debian (xandros) but only after editing configure directly to remove any checks for atk version , atk is correct version but whatever method configure uses for checking this version does not work (at least on my debian)
PyGTK 2.6 builds without such problems so I don't think its my system??
Any Ideas ?
