Both create a new tree model, using $root as new root node.
IMO there could be a difference:
> $filter = $store->filter_new($root);
(definitely, I tried it) uses $root as (invisible) root, so that the
first level below $root is visible in the tree.
> $filter = new GtkTreeModelFilter($store, $root);
That should IMO use $root (being visible itself) as first level entry.
Would that make sense? I don't know.
