The original version was generated automatically and tried to convert
the filename from utf-8. That didn't work because the filenames with
non-ascii chars aren't real utf-8, and the only message was "couldn't
convert string from utf-8". So you didn't even come to echoing the
filename, because the method failed before returning something.
