Forget it, I just found the pixbuf rendering thing which solves the problem in a much nicer way :)

Subject: The future of the humble bitmap
Hi Andrei, all I know bitmaps are problematic - they're a typeless type, kinda thing - but they're actually used in quite a number of the older (deprecated) functions. What should I do with them within current internals? Cast them to a GdkPixmap? or a GdkDrawable? or just return a GObject? I guess declaring a bitmap_ce is out of the question, or can I fake a boxed type? - Steph
