It sounds like a symptom of some sort of memory leak. However, I am not
able to get it to crash at all, which makes debugging practically
impossible.

I use RedHat 7.1/7.2 (on two different machines). Perhaps, this happens
only on SuSE? Are you able to test under some other distribution of
Linux? Maybe someone else on this list can confirm this crash?
