I am unsure about the technical reasons behind this, however if you are trying to do something like a shaped window, it does not matter in that case:
"An opaque structure representing an offscreen drawable of depth 1. Pointers to structures of type GdkPixmap, GdkBitmap, and GdkWindow, can often be used interchangeably. The type GdkDrawable refers generically to any of these types."
(http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/gdk/gdk-Bitmaps-and-Pixmaps.html)
$pixbuf = GdkPixbuf::new_from_file();
$pixmap = $pixbuf->render_pixmap_and_mask();
$window->shape_combine_mask($pixmap[1],0,0);

Hello, GdkBitmap seems to have been overlooked. Its not even listed in the coverage list. The GdkPixbuf::render_pixmap_and_mask should return a GdkPixbuf and a GdkBitmap, but if I call the method in PHP with a GdkPixbuf that has an alpha channel (i.e. one that should be returning a GdkBitmap object) both returned objects are of type GdkPixmap. You can verify this with the instanceof operator or by var_dump(). -Jake Cobb
