Below is a message I left on the WIKI. But since the
List archives are searchable, I thought I post here
too. The message was both an attempt to answer the
question of how to install php-gtk on Slackware 9.1
and a learning exercise for me. I would appreciate it
if any one had anything to add or corrections to make
that they do so.
Additionally, I would be happy to provide a Slackware
9.1 binary package to anyone that wants to host a
download for it. Now that I know how to get it
working, I can start to compile in some of the options
and such. (GtkHTML, Scintilla for example)
Further, when PHP-GTK 2 is released, I would be happy
to try to create a Slackware package for that to. Or
at the very least, provide detailed compile
instructions.

Question:
How do you install php-gtk 1.0 on a Slackware 9.1 box?
Answer:
This is how I got it to work. Might not be the best
way, but now I have a binary package. :=) First I
downloaded and installed the following tools:
libtool 1.4.2
automake 1.4
autoconf 2.13
You may need to log off and then log back on at this
point.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$ This is important $$$ $$$
$$$ Slackware doesn't compile php in such a way that
you can $$$
$$$ compile php-gtk. The following step can't be
ignored. $$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Next I downloaded the source code for php. I used
php-4.3.5RC3.tar.gz. So far, I've had no problems.
This is how I installed php.
tar -xzvf php-4.3.5RC3.tar.gz
cd php-4.3.5RC3
./configure --disable-cgi
make
su
make install
You may need to log off and then log back on at this
point.
Next I untared the php-gtk-1.0.0.tar.gz file and began
the install process.
tar -xzvf php-gtk-1.0.0.tar.gz
cd php-gtk-1.0.0
./buildconf
./configure
At this point I got an error
syntax error near unexpected token
`PHP_GTK_ARG_ENABLE(debug,' blah blah blah....
The error told me what line the offending code was on
so I commented out that line of code and the one right
after it. (1392 and 1393 I think but I can't be sure.)
Next I typed the following command...
phpize
What it does, I don't know. I read it some where in
the mailing list or something.
Then I tried ./configure and make again. This time I
did it using a configure argument like this..
./configure --disable-libglade
make
I have chkinstall installed on my Slackware box so
that's what I did instead of running make install.
This created and installed a Slackware package for me.
Finally I e-mailed this package home so that I could
test the package on another Slackware 9.1 box. It
installed (without all of the above bs) with only one
minor, easy to fix, glitch. The php_gtk.so didn't get
installed to the same place as the machine at work.
This is probably because of the recompile of php. In
any case the following command fixed the problem for
me.
cp
/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20020429/php_gtk.so /usr/lib/php/extensions/
