I have been installing MySQL from rpms for a long time, never once have they
failed to upgrade or install.
after downloading the full set of rpms:
rpm -Uvh MySQL*
Moments later mysqld is running, has been added to your startup, a new user
'mysql' has been added to your system and mysqld is running as the 'mysql'
user.
Try and get that from a tarball!
