suse 7 + php 3: phpinfo() fails

I did an installation with: suse7, apache, php 3 (everything from sese 7 package). no error reported during the installation But a standard test html file: <html>This is a test<\html><?php phpinfo(); ?> gives only "This is a test" in my browser. Is Apache processing php code? Probably yes, I see html but I I dont see any "?php..." in my output. But why dont I see any phpinfo output? can anybody understand the mistake in the installation/configuration by seeing this result? (httpd.conf seems correct to me) Thanks FZ
