Login problems after upgrading PHP

Hi All,
I have a Red hat linux 7.3 machine with apache 1.3 and php 4.0.6 which is running fine perfectly.
After upgrading my php version from 4.0.6 to 4.2.3, I started to get login failures when I try to check my mails Via squrieelmail.
After I picked up on the problem, I reverted to php 4.0.6 and the problem vanishes.
Can any one help me where could be the problem and where I am going wrong. How can I get rid of this login faliures when I upgrade my php. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated to carry forward.
