make install woes on OS X Server

I'm installing php4 as a DSO for Apache on Mac OS X Server. The
configure and make command execute with no problem, but the make
install command gives the following error:
cp:
/usr/local/php4/php-4.0.3pl1/pear//usr/local/php4/php-4.0.3pl1/pear/PEAR.php:
No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [install-data-local] Error 1
make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
All the proper files and directories do exist, though. Any ideas?
