the bundled version of GD and the download version of GD can't create ..gif images because the
gif LZW compression algoritm is licensed by Unisys.
This may be your problem.
follow this link: http://www.rime.com.au/gd/ , you can get
the rules to patch the current version of GD to support gif images.
