If you download the php windows installer you don't have to go anywhere near
the registry. I don't know for sure about there being more ASP than PHP
servers, however there are more Apache servers than IIS, and the most
popular module for Apache is php.
Clearly, most people are using php on proper server OS's (NT, *nix), but I'm
sure if you post a message to the php win list you will illicit help form
someone using win 98. I assure you you'll have a happier life programming in
php than ASP!
Cheers
