Linking PHP4 without Shared Libaries for PHP Components

I am using PHP 4.0.3 and have been since PHP 3.0.16. I installed
libraries for items like mcrypt and mhash, but PHP uses the shared
libraries of those programs when linking. Is there anyway to force PHP to
not link against the shared librariews, but rather the static libraries
of the programs. Shared libraries are nice but also can make life a
little bit of a pain. if ya know of any way to do this please let me know.
