PHP 4.3.4 Configure freezes on Solaris 2.8

./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs=/gaul/special/cs490/cs490-02/apache/bin
/apxs
creating cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... sparc-sun-solaris2.8
and then freezes.
I notice that a lot of people have posted on the list with the same problem,
but no solution. Has anyone come up with anything? I check my top and I see
that tr is taking up a whole cpu.
Any ideas?
