Thanks Bruce and Josh,
Even though it may be technically possible I think it would be better to
wait and use a more powerful machine. I'll also start researching how I
could implement complete redundancy (i.e. two boxes where the data is
concurrently updated on both. Ideally it would be great if one box fails
that another one could be plugged in and the working box would bring the
other one up to date. Bit of a pipedream but not beyond the realms of
possibility).
Regards,
Adam

Until recently, our 'production' server was a P120 with a fairly light
amount of ram, running apache+php+mysql. It coped quite well. Not a huge
website but we do get a few hits and almost all our pages make heavy use
of php/mysql.
otoh; a 486 with 8M or ram is probably a little on the 'light'
side.. It might OK if you're prepared to do a custom kernel, and
kill off all the extra stuff (X11, sendmail, etc). And if you have
a really small number of hits.
I'd suggest a 486DX4-120 or P100 with 32M as an absolute minimum
myself.
