GD Problems

I am having massive problems apparently related to GD when attempting to
effect a static install of php-4.0.1 into Apache 1.3.12.
Essentially, the make generates a long string of "undefined reference" to
various items which include, but are not limited to "php_if_imagepsbox" as
well as others which have flown off the screen.
I have gd 1.8.3 installed
When I configure the php I have tried it without any gd reference and
"--with-gd=/usr/local"
