mcrypt - Supported Cyphers: none

I'm trying to install php on a solaris2.7 box running apache1.3.14. The compile/install goes fine, but phpinfo() lists mcrypt Supported modes and Supported Cyphers as "none". I've tried setting mcrypt.algorythms_dir and mcrypt.modes_dir to /usr/local/lib/libmcrypt, but it still does not find the cyphers or modes. I have comppiled libmcrypt with --disable-posix-threads.
