Oh crap

Im totally confused here. I installed PHP onto my local machine, and it runs through apache perfectly. When I upload the .php document to my web server with Netscape FTP, when you try to view it it just comes up blank. This is probably fairly obvious but Im silly. How do I make Apache be my actual websitehost, instead of just a localhost? Or do I install PHP on my real server which is a UNIX? (Im running Windows98 here) and how do I do that? Can someone be nice and give me a long clear explanation:)? Im just one person without a ntwork and I am confused.
