Hi,
The compiled module can be placed anywhere on the server you like, but you'll need to be able to do a few things on the server to get this working. You didn't say, but the fact that you are using telnet to access the system leads me to the conclusion that it is some form of Unix that your server is using, first you'll need to build a cross compiler for the exact system your ISP is using (note: this step can be skipped if you have a pre-built binary of the PHP module you want to use, on the system you want to use it) you can obtain all the necessary tools and instructions for building a cross compiler from the gnu website (www.gnu.org).
Build the DSO module with the cross compiler on your local unix system and copy it to the place in your webspace where you want it. Next you'll need to know whether your server supports dynamic module additions, and also you'll need access to servers config file. if you have access to all this stuff, then you need to add the lines to the config, then the server will need to be restarted. You probably have no control over this, so you'll have to ask demon to do it for you (or you can overload it with requests and sneakily crash it ^_^ ).
I find it fairly unlikely that Demon will let you do all this stuff, but it is theoretically possible to store the module in you webspace and load it into the server. The simpler option is to make a proposal to demon to install PHP themselves, point out to them that (if well configured) it can be safe for a large number of users to use without much monitoring. It can't hurt to try eh?

Hi all New to PHP and have read through the installation instructions - the problem I have is that the ISP of work`s choice, Demon Internet does not support PHP. Is it possible to put PHP in a /modules/ directory in my own webspace or does it have to be installed in the directories as per the instructions? Also I don`t have anything near root access on the server in question, only standard limited telnet and FTP to the webspace we rent from Demon. Any thoughts?
