missing SCRIPT_URL with Apache2, mod_php and mod_rewrite

Hi, I am trying to port over some code that uses the SCRIPT_URL environment variable - which is exposed by Apache mod_rewrite, but SCRIPT_URL and SCRIPT_URI are undefined in my environment. I am running Suse 9.1 with the standard Apache2, mod_php4 and mod_rewrite. I have tried changing the order that modules are loaded, but that did not affect anything Any help would be greatly appreciated.
