php and mysql work, but not together

Hi there, I've successfully installed php using the quick installation
method (Redhat apache and apache-devel rpms, then used the default
configure options for php). PHP definitely works, however, I can't seem
to connect to mysql:
"Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server
through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111) in /var/www/html/rt.php
on line 10"
The mysql client works just fine, the mysql.sock file is right there in
/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock, which is where php is looking for it... why
can't PHP find it, yet I have no trouble connecting to mysqld using the
mysql client?
