Trouble building PHP5 with local build of libxml2

I'm having problems building PHP5 with the enable-soap option. Since my webhost will not update libxml2 to the correct version for php5, i have to build my own version of it before building php5. So, i built libxml2-2.6.12, installed it to a local directory, and configured the php option --with-libxml-dir to point to this location. Has anyone seen this before and/or knows how to get my build to point to my local version of libxml2? thanks in advance, -kevin
