Thanks for you help, I figured the lib64 thing out after awhile. Referencing PHP Bug #28150, status is "won't fix" This means that PHP does not support, and has no intention to support AMD 64 linux!!! Like how long has 64bit been around! :|
My general dissatisfaction with PHP grows ever larger inciting me to move away from PHP with ever increasing vigor. I dont blame you, maybe the developers think that 64bit is going to go away?
I think you might find you are far from alone these days. Though I did wonder why PHP had so much trouble compiling on one of the most common flavours of Linux ever used. Makes me wonder whats going on in the disjointed PHP thinktank! Glad I only compiled it (eventually) for others to use, and don't use it myself. :)

I'm trying to install PHP on AMDx86-64 on SuSe 9.2 but I'm having problems with the install picking up the 64 bit libraries in /usr/lib64.
