problem building with gdbm

Hi I am trying to force the PHP (ver 3.016) build to link to gdbm NOT dbm or ndbm. IRIX 6.5.8 (both native cc and gcc give same results). I have gdbm (1.8) installed. libgdbm.so is in /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib. gdbm.h is in /usr/include and /usr/local/include. I have also made sure this is set in LD_LIBRARY_PATH. the configure terminates, relevant messages are: checking for gdbm_open in -lgdbm... no checking for dbm_open in -ldb... yes checking preferred dbm library... ndbm chosen checking for gdbm_open in -lgdbm... no configure: error: cannot find necessary library Not sure why the libgdbm lib is not being linked to? any help much appreciated!
