call to undefined function

i just recompiled php (4.0.0 and 4.0.4) today and i'm getting
call to undefined function when i write
<?php
phpinfo()
?>
php is working since
<?php
echo "test";
?>
works
recently i upgraded to red hat 7.0 and i also installed kernel 2.4
i'm not sure if i have compiled php since the above upgrades but
i sure have compiled php quite a lot and with different packages before
but for the above and to try to isolate the problem i did
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs
still i doesn't work
