really need help running apache and mod_php4 under Linux

Hi there, i have a question about how to run apache 1.3 and mode_php4 under linux 2.4 (SuSE 7.1). I installed the packages (rpms) fpr mod_php4, mysql, mysql-shared and of course apache. I did'nt change the httpd.config nor the php.ini lying under /etc/httpd. I did change the /etc/ld.so.conf to tell the dynamic linker that there are new libs, and executing ldconfig -p | grep php4 gives the expected result that libphp4.so is known by the linker under the path "/usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so". Still the apache won't start, posting Cannot load "/usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so" into server : shared object not open into its logfile under /var/log/rcapache.log. I really need your help, tried for days now without success. Thanks in advance, Thorsten Volkmer-Wolf
