Problems installing PHP

I get the following error when trying to compile PHP as a CGI
theoddballs: {354} % make
"Makefile", line 34: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 35: Need an operator
"Makefile", line 36: Need an operator
Fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
I'm using BSDI, and this happens when i type "make" after runing
"./configure" with no options. I've tried version 4.0.0 4.0.1, and 4.0.2
with no luck.
Anyone got any ideas?
