php in html

I notice in the manual that you can imbed php code directly into html
documents (ie pages that have an .html extension) - this is what I want to
do.
However, if I place php code directly into my html documents, it is ignored.
If I rename the pages to end with a .php extension they work fine.
Is there a setting I have missed?
