mysql + apache + php4

Hi there..i have a problem installing php4 with Apache.
First mysql 3.22.xx is installed (compiled source) and it goes all ok.
Then i ./configure , make and make install php as indicated in the INSTALL file.
The problem arises when i make apache..
At some point during the installation i get this error msgs:
undefined reference to 'mysql_num_fields'
And then the 'undefined reference to' msgs keep filling the screen. Aparently all the
mysql functions are found without any reference.
I'm sure this is not a very bad problem..actually it must be some kind of library thing..but i
cannot figure it out :)
Any help/tip is highly appreciated.
