ldap compile error w/php missing undefined atexit reference

I'm running a redhat 7.0, 2.4.4 kernel
openldap 2.0.11
php 4.0.6
compiled and built openldap 2.0.11
but i configure php and i get errors
it states in debug.log that
openldap/lib/libldap.so: undefined reference to 'atexit'
what do i need to do to fix this?
