all-recursive error on make!!!

when running make, I get the following error:
stub.lo: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/php-4.0.3pl1'
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
these were my configure options:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-config-file-path=/
etc/httpd --with-mysql --with-informix --with-system-regex
any ideas why it would do this???
