I can only speak from personal experience, so correct me if I'm wrong...
one of the pros is that you don't have to recompile apache with each new
php build. You just compile php as a DSO, put it in the right place, and
restart your web server.
one of the cons is that I can't always get certain extensions to work in
php as a DSO. I'd had trouble getting Sablotron, T1lib, and mysql working
when using apxs. But they work fine when I compile them into apache as a
module.
All you need to do to use it is compile apache with the so module.
./configure --enable-module=so && make
Then tell php where the apxs program is during your compile
./configure \
--with-apxs=/www/bin/apxs \
--with-mysql=/usr/local \
--enable-track-vars \
&& make
